NYS security guard training FAQs
Planned courses include the 8-Hour Pre-Assignment, 16-Hour On-the-Job, 8-Hour Annual In-Service, 47-Hour Firearms and 8-Hour Annual Firearms training courses. Availability, pricing and class dates will be announced when enrollment opens.
Unarmed guards generally complete the 8-Hour Pre-Assignment Course, the 16-Hour On-the-Job Course within 90 days of employment and the 8-Hour Annual In-Service Course each calendar year. Armed guards generally complete those requirements plus the 47-Hour Firearms Course and annual 8-Hour Firearms Training. Certain exemptions may apply.
Students must possess a valid New York State pistol permit and security guard registration before enrolling. Successfully completing the course allows the student to apply for an armed security guard registration upgrade, but it does not automatically issue the registration.
Not yet. WSC Defense’s security guard courses are coming soon. Joining the priority list is free and carries no commitment, but it does not reserve a seat. Priority-list members will be notified when course dates, pricing and enrollment become available.
